Family Is a Proving Ground, Not a Battlefield

When we lived in Maryland I would periodically hear the name of a place called the Aberdeen Proving Ground.  One day as I was driving along near to Aberdeen I heard an explosion, I turned to the person next to me and said 'did you hear that?'  The person just said, 'Oh, that's just the proving ground, they are testing weaponry there.'  That is why Aberdeen Proving Ground exists, it is the place where the military services test fire all kinds of explosives and where they test run military machinery.  It is a place to find out what works and what does not work.

A family is also a proving ground.  We test out our actions, our words, our ideas, our clothing styles, our hair styles on our family.  Somethings pass with flying colors and other attitudes and actions are sent back for further refinement.  The Family Proving Ground tests all kinds of relationships - marriage, parent-child, siblings, step-families, grandparents and more. When we have been hurt by some of these test shots we need to be willing to forgive each other for the sake of our family, and so we do not have to drag around the hurt with us. The Apostle Paul challenged the church at Colosse to act like a healthy family "Bearing with one another and, if one has a complaint against another, forgiving each other; as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive" Colossians 3:13.

Marriage is a great example - when we got married I had no idea what it meant to be a husband.  I tried various approaches to make our marriage fit my idea of happiness.  Sometimes it worked and sometimes it was a big dud.  Since I was willing to learn and my wife was willing to learn, our marriage has just gotten better with time.  Sure there have been lots of misfirings and explosions, but in the end we have learned from each other more than anyone else in the world.

Parenthood is another proving ground.  Most parents develop an incredible array of short-range and long-range missiles that they fire consistently.  The missiles are not meant to harm those in the family, they are aimed at threats to those in the family - laziness, bad friends, bad attitudes, inappropriate clothing and more. Sometimes the practice rounds are misunderstood, they appear to be aimed at our hearts, when they are actually aimed at actions or issues that is just really close to us. Sometimes it is hard to tell the difference.  And remember this, a parent is testing out this whole parenthood thing and kids are testing out the whole kid thing and some times sparks fly.

I’d like for us to think of family (and church family) as a proving ground not a battlefield.  A battlefield is a place of victory and defeat, life and death, and scheming and hurting at the expense of others. The same weapons which are fired as test are fired to cause damage to others.  Families might have issues, but when it is all said and done families should not be attacking each other, they should be supporting each other as we figure out how to be healthy and whole.

The Apostle Paul's admonition to the church family at Thessalonica rings true for other families as well. "Therefore encourage one another and build one another up, just as you are doing" 1 Thessalonians 5:11.

Two Different Radio Stations

Recently I was driving home and something strange happened as I was leaving Queensbury NY and entering Hudson Falls NY.  I was listening to a public radio station, which I call "beautiful music", and I was trying out a different public radio station which is based in Vermont.  As I was listening to "beautiful music" a Rap/R & B station suddenly came on my radio.  There was no space between these completely different genres of music, and I initially thought that this was an experimental kind of classical music.  Then just as suddenly I was listening to classical music again.  In a few seconds I figured out what was happening, I was just the right distance between these two stations and they were battling for the soul of my FM station. My station was switching back and forth between "hey, ho" and Yo Yo Ma every few seconds. I listened to the musical mashup for a while but ultimately the sounds and rhythms felt too diverse and I was not enjoying either of...

The Positive Power of Some

I have found in my life that I tend to be an all-or-nothing type of person.  I am either going to only eat health food or eat any junk food I want.  I am either going to be completely on top of our financial situation with stringent budgets or just spend freely.  I was considering just today the positive power of some. Today I only had about half an hour to mow part of the lawn and everything within me said that I either had to mow the entire lawn of mow none of the lawn - all-or-nothing.  The thought came to mind that I could mow the part of the lawn which grows the most quickly and is most visible to the public eye. "Nay" my inner all-or-nothing voice said, "you should probably just go watch Netflix!" I started wondering if that was God talking to me or someone else.  I realized that I would get a little exercise, I would feel good about my property and myself, my lawn would look better and my wife would be happier if I just mowed some of my lawn over the ne...

Pollution-free

I am writing this post during the 2020 Covid-19 lockdown.  There are reports worldwide about the effect that the lack of pollution is having on cities.  In Venice, which recently had murky, dirty, lifeless canals because of the constant boat traffic, water pollution and cruise ships, the canals are now becoming clear and there fish swimming in them - CNN story link .  In India because of the lack of air pollution people in the state of Punjab can now see the Himalayan mountains for the first time in decades - CNN story link . On a daily basis we are reading about the impact of a lack of factory production and travel upon the environment.  This lockdown has only been in place for a few months and nature is just naturally healing itself.  When the lockdown is lifted, it will be interesting to see if Venice values tourism over clean and healthy canals and if Punjab values industrialization over clean air. We face the same question in our lives - what will we va...
